PETER SHANKMAN

The entire world stops today, almost all news streamlines into one story (with the exception of a terrible plane crash/act of domestic terrorism in Texas.) Everything has shut down now, as the world waits… Waits… Waits for the Tiger… not to Roar, but to meekly crawl out of his den, wring his hands, shuffle around, apologize, and ask for forgiveness. At least, that’s the script he’ll stick to. In real life? Tiger is sleeping like a baby tonight, the night before he hits the public and the media for the first time since his encounter with a tree, a five-iron to the head, and a dozen or so women. Why? Because it comes down to this: We need Tiger a [...]

First off – This isn’t some Tim Ferris garbage about how you can live on an island and only work between 5:48pm and 5:49pm. If you don’t love what you do, this isn’t going to help you, stop reading now, as geographic location is the least of your worries. I LIKE work. Hell – I LOVE what I do. I’m fortunate enough to have a good paying career in an industry that I love. I supplement my main career with a speaking career that’s quickly becoming a second full-time career – Finally, I consult to companies all around the world on marketing, social media, and customer service. So believe me – I’m busy. But the difference here, is that I’m [...]

Go to Google right now and type in the word “Publicity” without the quotes. Go ahead. I’ll wait. Notice the second item that comes up in search? NOT in the Google ads, but in actual organic search? Here’s a photo, in case you didn’t. Yes, that’s HARO right there as number two, right behind Wikipedia, and in FRONT of a domain with the word “Publicity” in it. Thank you Evan, at First Page Sage. I was never a real believer in SEO, thought it was too much math, and figured it better to get people to link to us, which would help grow our ranking in Google. I still DO believe that – no doubt. But I also have been [...]

I got to wear the 1986 New York Mets World Series Ring and hold the trophy today, in a parking lot of an Embassy Suites, in Omaha, Nebraska, because Ed Hearn, a former NY Mets player, sent me an email asking for advice about publicity. I get a lot of questions from people who see me speak, are on HARO, have read my book, or have seen me on TV. Email is probably 60% or more of my time. I’ve been told over and over to outsource my email. I will never do it. If someone takes the time to email me, the least I can do is email them back, even if it’s just to say “no thanks.” My [...]

Spent the past four days in Vegas at Affiliate Summit – Much like Twitter was the big noise on everyone’s lips last year, this year was all about FourSquare. If you haven’t gotten sucked into the black tar heroin that is FourSquare, it’s essentially a location based check-in service, where you compete to become “Mayor” of various locations around the world. You can enter new locations as you find them, and if played right, will be a goldmine for savvy companies who understand the value of immediate marketing. Some of the key takeaways from the summit regarding FourSquare from my perspective: People simply LOVE to announce where they are. Whether it was at the Rio Hotel, the Heart Bar or [...]
