PETER SHANKMAN

So this is it. Six months of training comes down to tomorrow morning. Six months of going to sleep early. Six months of swimming. Of biking. Of running. All for this. It all comes down to tomorrow. From 7am to midnight. I have 17 hours to prove myself on my field of battle. I will endeavor to do so. And while I am unsure of the outcome, I have never been more sure of one thing as I am of this: I will not quit. I will not quit. I will not quit. I WILL NOT QUIT. There are three things that can take me off that course tomorrow. I will cross the finish line in under 17 hours. or [...]

Quote of the day: “So Peter… Are you sure you really consult to NASA?” Said by my friend and fellow Ironman racer Damien of Candid Wines, as he noticed that I was putting every single piece of my bike on backwards. Today was a long day. Woke up around 6am to get over to the park by 7 to go for a practice swim. Everywhere I went today, there were reminders of what I was about to do, and these reminders were scary. I tried to make the best of the fear, and laugh at it. It worked. Walking into the park area where the swim was to start, the first thing I noticed was how big the water was [...]

It’s about 2:30am on Wednesday morning, November 24th. If you’re up this late (or this early) you’re probably cooking for a house of people for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving celebration in the US. If you’re up this early in Europe or Asia, well, good Wednesday to you. I woke up about 45 minutes ago, and have been staring at the ceiling ever since. I can’t get back to sleep, I lie here listening to myself breathe, laughing in the delightful irony that is the fact that I can’t sleep, and what I’m worrying about requires lots of sleep. In essence, my inability to sleep is causing me to worry even more about the reason I can’t sleep. Vicious cycle holding on line [...]

I put my horrible body issues aside this month and was honored to be asked to participate in the Estee Lauder Breast Cancer Awareness Pledge Campaign. Fact is, I like women. And breast cancer is a deadly disease that affects women. But: It affects all of us – moms, sisters, girlfriends, daughters – and the people who love them. And guess what – It’s not only limited to women – breast cancer strikes men, as well. But more than that, I’ve seen what breast cancer can do to people I care about. And if that’s something that we can help prevent by encouraging early detection and the spread of information, to not do it is a crime. We all have [...]

Last week I tweeted that I’d come up with the perfect challenge for myself for September. So here it is. I’m going to try and go the entire month without using Mass Transit, Taxicabs, or car services within the five boroughs AT ALL. In other words, I’m going to become a pure, 100% walker. I live all the way on one side of Manhattan. (The West side. The good side.) Anyway… There’s a bus that stops right in front of my apartment, and makes it incredibly easy to get to the middle of the city, where I can grab any subway I want. While this is easy, it also lets me leave at like, 7:40 for an 8am meeting downtown, [...]
