Congratulations to Josh Friedlander!

Have you joined my incredibly non-annoying, once-in-a-while email newsletter?

Congratulations to kick-ass reporter, and my friend, Josh Friedlander of Absolute Return Magazine, for landing in NewsBios’ 30 under 30! Welcome to the club, Josh! (I was in PR Week’s 30u30 in 2000.) Of course, now I’m old. Back in MY DAY, Josh they didn’t HAVE this new fangled INTERNET. We had to go to the LIBRARY! Up hill! In snow! Both ways!!

Well done, kiddo. Congratulations.

I’ve been with five startups – two with $400M+ acquisitions, three flame-outs. Your advice is worth it’s weight in gold!

One I’d add – sort of an amplification of #5 – which Nicholas Woodman did: “Get your good-idea prototype into the hands of smart, passionate users, listen to their feedback, and incorporate their changes quickly.”

One startup I was with went through $50M in VC money trying to build the perfect “god box” system on a chip. Our competitor came out with a product 1/10th as powerful, but got it into the hands of customers quickly, who provided the feedback needed to get the product where it needed to be. They had a payday. We had a liquidation.

Great to hear someone who did it right – and how cool for you to have been “present at the creation!”

  • Well put, Peter. This is an incredible example for all entrepreneurs to study. Far too many people are out there looking to create new markets when there are so many that are underserved or unfulfilled like the one GoPro went after.

That said, having a product that is a built-in marketing machine is pretty awesome and quite helpful in the growth of your company.

Happy New Year and thanks for all the great content in 2012!

  • Let’s not forget passion & enthusiasm. Let’s face it, Nicholas Woodman created something & generated an “aha moment” for a lot of folks.

  • Great article, and yeah, Nicholas really did nail it. I heard of GoPro a long time before I even saw one. And since my brother has had one, our trip videos have become pretty damn awesome to watch.

What’s cool as well, is that he’s also created a product that works better with the accessories you can purchase to accompany it. Well played.

I’m wondering if it would be their eventual doom if they tried to enter additional categories in the camera realm? Even if their fans begged them.

Has the law of line extension still stick?
