Good point, Mike: "The problem with the release, reprinted below, is that it's hollow. It's not apologetic, it's attempting to, if not justify his actions and remarks, then at least 'repair' what he said."

And that repair is a more difficult and requires, well, a sincerity far beyond the PR-crafted talking point. It's not the the penny nail in the tread but the heavy-duty roofing nail in the sidewall.

Have you read Levick's analysis? "First, to be effective, the picture of his remorse must be real. The emotion must be real. Gibson may be a convincing actor by trade, but I doubt Barrymore or Olivier could fake it in his situation."

Pricesless: "Ah, Mel... Shoulda had your driver pick you up."
Great perspective on a PR nightmare. And although I think Mel's PR people did have a venti espresso-a-thon prior to getting down to busines, I'd have to think it also included a little visit to Margaritaville.
Cheers.

So the ABC deal goes away, and maybe his career. So what? The man has earned more money that most of us can ever fathom. Do you really think he gives a rat's ass whether he works again or not?

On the other hand, it's true, his words and actions were deplorable at best. But just like the Lindsay Lohans and Paris Hiltons of the world, if we all could just ignore them, and assign no value to what they say or do, they will eventually fade away.

I thought that the handling of the crisis was done very well (my blog post about it Mel Teaches Good Crisis Management). I'm of the mindset that his apology needs to be complete with the first statement. Why? If he issues a quick "I'm getting help statement" and then he issues a longer statement, he's just prolonged his media crisis.

With his handling of this crisis, no major media outlets are covering this story on Monday morning.

You and I do agree, however, that the Disney deal is a dead one....
