PETER SHANKMAN

Things I’d Like to See Happen in 2012

Instead of resolutions, I’m creating a list of things I’d like to see happen in 2012. Some are industry in nature, some professional, some personal. I encourage you to add yours in the comments, and check back occasionally throughout the year to see how we’re doing.

1) May 2012 be the year that passive aggressive status updates cease. It’d be so nice to see a status update from someone that simply says “I’m pissed off, I need to blow off some steam,” as opposed to “I wish that I lived in a world where people kept their promises and didn’t lie to get what they wanted while other people were left hoping that happens.” Passive-agressiveness helps no one. Don’t be a part of the problem.

2) May 2012 be the year that all of the self-appointed gurus, experts, and rock-stars fall off cliffs to their mangled, bloody deaths into the oceans of anonymity, thousands of feet below.

3) May 2012 be the year that the TSA either gets its shit together, or gets disbanded in favor of transportation security that’s actually effective, useful, and serves a purpose other than theater.

4) May 2012 be the year of the least amount of public information about any of the Kardashians.

5) May 2012 be the year where we all get smart enough to stop auto-linking every single niche social network to Twitter and Facebook. No one EVER needs to know that you’re ordering a mocha latte at Starbucks, or walking through the locker room at your gym.

6) May 2012 be the year that everyone becomes smart enough to realize that if the incident happens, even if there’s no one with a camera within a hundred miles, it’ll probably wind up online, and that the best way to avoid that happening is to make sure you aren’t part of the incident in the first place. This goes for anything involving alcohol, public nudity, arguments, or stuff that happens in a men’s bathroom.

7) May 2012 be the year that people learn the difference between “there,” “their,” and “they’re.”

8) May 2012 be the year that people stop using “password” as their password.

9) May 2012 be the year that people stop reacting to emails, posts, or tweets that purportedly comes from a friend, yet doesn’t seem to be written in the same language they normally use, and usually has a link that ends in .ru.

10) May 2012 be the year I learn to be a better listener .

11) May 2012 be the year that United Airlines puts flat-bed seats on their EWR-LAX run.

12) May 2012 be the year that I exceed 2011′s number of speaking and consulting gigs.

13) May 2012 be the year that HARO breaks over 1,000,000 users.

14) May 2012 be the year that DailyWorth, SnapGoods, Namely, Trippy, ScotteVest, Right Next Door, Pixability, and all the companies in whom I’ve invested and for whom I advise break out into the mainstream and earn a ton of money.

15) May 2012 be the year NASA the Wondercat gets a new brother or sister

16) May 2012 be the year more of us learn the value and pure joy in volunteering, donating, or helping others.

17) May 2012 be the year I have an incredibly great Ironman NYC, but may it also be the year that I stay HEALTHY, and don’t obsess over my weight, every bite of food I eat, or what morsel contains how many calories.

18) May 2012 be the year I finally take a honeymoon with my new wife.

19) May 2012 be the year that the world becomes a better place because of something each of us has done during it.

20) May 2012 finally be a year of peace, happiness, love, and prosperity for all of us.

Happy New Year, my friends. Thank you for being here.

Happy new year

I agree with every single one of these.

My own additions:

1. May 2012 be the year that our government finally realizes that their job is to make America a great place to live, work and grow old. There is far too many broken things right now and it is their job to fix them. Working together no matter which party you are in needs to happen.

2. May 2012 be the year that you and I get to spend more than 5 minutes together outside of a dinner, party or other social gathering.

3. May 2012 be the year that more of us get involved with nonprofits, schools and other charity organizations to help them thrive in the future.

I’m sure there are more, but those are the ones that come right to mind.

Thanks for making 2011 an interesting year and I hope that 2012 is even better for both of us. Now sign off and get on that honeymoon!!!!

I’m sitting here thinking of this time last year, when I suddenly found myself without a place to live and had no idea what 2011 would bring. Now, I’m sitting on the couch at home, reading blog posts and watching the daily show and wondering about the year to come.

My list?

1. May 2012 be the year I turn the my non profit and volunteer projects into self-sustaining businesses.
2. May I finally learn to create a clear separation between my work life and personal life.

If I accomplish those two things, I’ll be more than satisfied.

I feel lucky to know you, Peter. Have a happy and healthy New Year. May everything on your list come true, especially the honeymoon part.

Besitos de Argentina!

Amen to #16 – We should all do something generous and bigger than ourselves. And buying a random person their coffee at Starbucks shouldn’t count. As for #18 – Take your wife on a honeymoon to meet your “girlfriend” – that cute baby elephant…it’s about time she meets her.

May 2012 bring all people to a great understand of all things that are around us and realize that the little things in life are important. Agree with getting involved with non-profits as they need to thrive in the future.
Note: Peter learn to give yourself time and your wife too.

Amen to the above, except I WANT to keep my business and personal life combined, more fluid and flexible and fun (having sat in a sterile cubicle too long, working at home really fits). As a woman ignored too often in too many relationships, #18 is primo for you, Peter.

My #7 – is for people (from my students to the media) to realize the need to not mix singular nouns with plural pronouns, as in “The team won their championship” and “The student went to their class.” I wrote to Mark Zuckerberg and other website managers with auto-replies like “Damien changed their profile” about this two years ago, suggesting gender-neutral, active alternatives like See Damien’s new profile – no change yet.

You absolutely need to schedule that honeymoon! The editor in me thanks you for #7, the intelligent woman in me thanks you for #4.

Oh, and just out of curiosity…are you talking about a feline brother/sister for NASA in #15, or a human one? ;-)

Wishing you & all the HARO family a wonderful & prosperous 2012!

My biggest wish for 2012 is for the “developed” world to learn that growth is finite and sustainability is the answer to many of our current “problems”. If we live a little more modestly and consume a little less, there will be more work and more happiness for everyone.

Spawned by your blog posts (like this one) and your Blog World keynote, among other non-Shankman related factors, 2012 is the year where I’m revamping my blog to be more personal. I’m changing the URL, the content and getting more real. Thanks Peter.

Here’s my (admittedly gloomy) take on point #3: The TSA will be completely privatized in 2012 to thunderous approval of Congress and the Senate, who will see it as a positive free-market solution to a government organization everyone hates. Unfortunately nothing will change – the big difference is that fliers will now have to pay extra for the privilege of being subjected to intrusive and unpleasant screening procedures. Also, private military corporations will make a mint from these contracts.
