PETER SHANKMAN

What’s Next?

So it’s 2011.

Welcome to the new year. I’m not going to bore you by telling you what BS resolutions you should try, since we both know none of us will keep them. I’ll simply tell you what I’d like to do.

I’d like to make more money.

I’d like to have several sources of revenue, all working for me 24/7, even when I’m not.

I’d like to look good naked, when standing in front of a mirror, or in front of another person, or when I’m in a triathlon swimsuit before a big race.

I’d like to become faster in my athletic pursuits.

I’d like to make sure that I have time for myself, even if that means working, but doing so from an island or a beach or an airplane on my way to somewhere fun.

I’d like to continue to grow my name, my brand, and my ideas, reaching more people than ever before.

That’s what I’d like to do. My job is to figure out how to make those four things happen.

That’s a hell of a lot more fun than a stupid resolution. On the plus side, I’m already doing one of them – http://ayeartotenpercent.com

What would you like to do? List them below.

I want the same things as your first three.

Your I Likes seem pretty good!

I like to Just Be! – Grateful that I am here and alive to have all the conversations waiting to be exchanged – to see the sights I’ve not yet seen – the friends I’ve not yet made.

I’d like to be pain free … Anything else is a bonus!

Lovely!

I’m going to identify my highest, end values, so I can check myself every day to make sure the life I live now aligns to the life I want to have.

I’m going to accept that crappy things can happen, and I can either acknowledge something bad happened to me, or let that bad thing define me – I opt for the former, but was flirting with the latter for the last part of 2010. (Taking metaphorical inspiration from your No Baggage Challenge, I’m going to lighten my load to stop paying emotional heavy baggage fees and don a groovy vest instead).

I’m also going to take time for myself, realizing I can work full-time while pursuing my PhD full-time without hijacking my life and ignoring my friendships.

I’m going to get over my fear of losing control (because it is usually an illusion anyway) and rock the handstand, away from the wall, in yoga class!

Reduce the number of meetings by 50% and enjoy the moment.

I’m doing not-resolutions also, to wit: http://blog.shetech.com/2010/1.....me-number/ and http://blog.shetech.com/2011/0.....-the-year/

I learned with my daughter (as she fought leukemia) to replace the have to’s with GET TO’s and the wanna’s (or like to’s) with GONNA’s. So in her memory, I’m GONNA top my personal bests across the board, mind, body, spirit, family and business :D (won’t fill up your space with how I plan on doing that, but I do have a plan ;D)

January 3rd, 2011 12:02 PM
User Gravatar

1. Learn as much as I can
2. Play better with others
3. Make a real difference in the timeshare world.
4. Get paid what I’m worth, instead of what I usually settle for.
5. Travel on a non-timeshare related real vacation.
6. Attend great concerts with great friends.
7. Sell many books.
8. Stay healthy.
9. Stop living in the past.
10. Enjoy what I have more often.

Me? Here’s what I want —

1. To loose 20 pounds
2. To make more money
3. To be better to myself

Have a great year!

If you like what you do and are good at it, money usually follows.

But like you, I would like to make money while sleeping, and more of it.

Happy new year Peter!

My New Year’s resolution as posted on facebook New Year’s Day:

My New Year’s Resolution: Help to raise $45,000 for New Haven Children’s Hospital to buy MRI video googles. Why? So Owen (my 2.5 year old son) and other children won’t have to undergo sedation for (routine) MRIs. Check these out… http://www.cinemavision.biz/

Not quite sure how I will accomplish this yet but as the year unfolds I will figure it out!

What will be your contribution this year to help make our world a bit better?

Way to go, Peter! You can and WILL look the way you want, and be happier and healthier. I’ll let you borrow my mantra: If I found a way to feed my face and pack on the pounds, clearly I can find a way to take them off. :-)

My goals echo yours in many ways. It all comes down to a renewed focus on practicing positive thinking. Believe, and I shall achieve; doubt, and I will accomplish nothing.

Here’s to everyone achieving!

Instead of making more money, I’d like to find a way to be content with having “enough.” When I first heard about your 10 percent goal, I thought you were talking about tithing!

I’m wishing you happiness, satisfaction, and self-acceptance in the New Year, Peter!

I’d like to find a way to get a more ubiquitous (TV) demo for my PortaPocket line so that people will recognize its true function and not confuse it with just another ipod holder.

I’d like to get in at least 3 more major outlets for more distribution.

I’d also like to encourage more resources to truly understand the difficulty involved with launching small business and perhaps offer special reduced pricing for those of us working stiffs so we might be able to participate. ;-)

Beyond that, I’d like to be able to make people return their messages (whether e-mailed or voice) so that actual progress on issues can be made.

May all of us entrepreneurs out there be able to stay the course and have a HAPPY & PRODUCTIVE 2011!!

I’d like to be a food advocate and for people to really know where Cancer comes from.

January 3rd, 2011 01:53 PM
User Gravatar

I want to get LASIK, so I won’t ever have to rely on glasses to help me stay focused on what’s important: my wife, my kids, my house and myself. Work is important, too, but I need to remember that work will be there in morning.

Also, I’d like to make good on my pledge to take a multi-vitamin every day for the next 100 days. Simple and trite, I know, but three days into the new year and I already feel pretty good – not sure if it’s because of the vitamins, or because of something else. Anyway I look at it, life is great!

My motivations are

1) Reduce stress
2) Compete in first Triathlon
3) 5 passive income sources

2011 is going to be awesome.

I’d like to find love – what I really mean is I’d like love to find me. The kind of love that ‘gets’ me in a major ass way.

I’d like to train for a significant athletic event like trekking to base camp on Everest or ? Toss me some suggestions.

I’d like to find a place I can call home with my heart while I take my body on some great adventures.

I’d like my blog to take off amongst people who are ready to hear the message.

Most of all of these is love.

All of your resolutions sound great – and mine are the same. Except maybe I would add “start having babies!” to that list. ; )

January 3rd, 2011 01:05 PM

My list is similar to yours and HARO is helping me accomplish it. I contributed to an article with Dave Carpenter at AP about “Boomers and Retirement” through Haro and his article not only caused emails to me from all over the Country, but 2 Fox News (national and local) interviews, which caused another surge of emails. Because of this I have launched a blog http://www.boomerbackboard.com, which will focus on Boomers and Boomer issues.

Thank you guys……

Mike

Love it, Peter. It sounds like you’re tapping into some of the concepts of Tim Ferris’ Four Hour Work Week book. I love the concept but have struggled with some of the implementation aspects, so I look forward to learning more from you in 2011, as it seems like implementation is your strong suit. But the Ironmans are all you, brother.

I do recommend occasionally breaking the no booze rule for a mai tai when you find yourself in that beachy paradise!

I would like:

1. My new business – lifeelephant.com to become elephant size.
2. To be able to work from anywhere like a beach, an island, etc.
3. To be able to help more people.
4. To quit smoking and have no withdrawal.
5. To be able to learn more about social networking.

Thanks for asking Peter, what fun reading other’s desires.
I’d like to make more money passively, actively and any other -ly there is. How about massively!
I’d like to play a bigger game in my business so I can spare more midlife peeps the frustration of not looking and feeling the way they want to.
I’d like to do some athletic challenge somewhere beautiful
I’d like to connect on another level with some of the people I meet virtually, I want more human interaction this year.
I want to remember that everyone is doing their best.

1. I will live in the moment
2. I will successfully launch 9 more books in my “Peter Learns…” kids book series, #1 has already launched!
3. I will think of 3 things to be thankful about each morning, as a start to my day
4. I will appreciate my family and friends more
5. I will improve my finish times in bike races and duathlons
6. I will complete my first triathlon
7. I will re-connect with my oldest sister
8. I will grow my publishing business

Peter,

I have tasked myself with improving upon the acceptable. I think a lot of people think that they have to make huge changes to get big results. I am trying to make small improvements professionally, physically and personally. By applying myself and striving to consistently improve, I will continue to achieve.

I do, of course, have goals that are quite similar to yours.

Mostly, I am striving to enjoy the journey.

Thank you for all that you do. I enjoy and benefit from your examples.

I want to…
…spend my time looking forward and not looking back
…get rid of junk (material and human)
…focus more on what I want to do and not what I have to do. Life is so precious and too short.
… be more deliberate about joy

… recognize when God is opening a door and to walk through on Faith

January 3rd, 2011 03:17 PM
User Gravatar

Ditto on your first three!

I’d also like to improve my physique naturally, through nutrition and better exercise habits. I’m like the lady about whom Bob Fosse said, “She’s kept her girlish figure, and added so much more to it!” It’d be nice to drop the 3 dress sizes I’ve put on over the past 5 years.

And I’d like to get more organized. I am in my head, but my desk & house just always seem to be a mess, and there’s precious little time to address the stacks of papers. It’s something I need to chip away at a little each day until it’s all filed, tossed, shredded, or whatever else needs to be done with it.

If I can do all that this year, I’ll be thrilled!

I want to get toned. In 2010, I lost 40 pounds, and while I’m happy with my general shape, I want to look better.

I want to read more. I promised someone I’d read 111 books in 2011. If that pursuit makes me happy, then I’ll do it.

And in general, I want to speak my mind more in my marriage and help communicate what’s going to make me happy, and own it, and go get it.

January 3rd, 2011 05:03 PM
User Gravatar

I’m turning 40, so my goal is to get in the best shape of my life….physically, personally, and professionally.

More specifically:

1. Start cycling again (took a 10 year break…bad idea)
2. Create something everyday (or do what I can to enable my kids to release their creative juices…be a part of their creativity)
3. Read! Embrace and learn from outside ideas to make myself a better marketer.

January 3rd, 2011 09:09 PM
User Gravatar

What a great idea!
I’d like to make enough money in my business to quit my day job.
I’d like to have more freedom in my life and not be on the 9 to 5 schedule.
I’d like to be a faster, stronger runner.
I’d like to have a healthier relationship with food.
I’d like to lose that last 20 pounds.

January 3rd, 2011 10:45 PM
User Gravatar

lol you certainly don’t ask for much though.
As for me, heck I’d take your whole list but adding the following
1. 1/2 Ironman
2. improve posture (wish there was an app for that)
3. Find an eco-friendly bathroom cleaner that actually does a good job

January 3rd, 2011 10:16 PM
User Gravatar

I’d like to lose the last 30 of 100 lbs.

I’d like to help my friends promote and raise money for their causes.

I’d like to learn a few new things each month.

I’d like to have 18 uninterrupted hours a week to write, read and think.

I’d like to spend more time making people laugh and smile.

I’d like to continue to make a difference at work, at home and in my little corner of the universe.

I’d like for all of us to experience greater health, discover happiness in the little and occasional big things, and explore how to make a difference in the world (little or big – they all count).

Looking forward to your inspiring blogs throughout 2011, Peter!

If money makes you happier, then yes, please desire for more. If with one job you get more money, then what is the use of several sources?
You can get the body you want if you put your mind to it, like Ironman!
Time! That is a rare commodity for all as you do not control time! Time controls you. For you to have more time for yourself you should learn to administer it well. You cannot store time, you can only spend it. You can earn time, but you cannot own it.
Giving your ideas to people is the only one selfless act you have desired, so it is most likely to come your way.

You list a lot—all good, and good luck with them. I’ve kept mine simple and they are on a post-it at home and at the office, because they apply to both areas of my life. There are just 3 words, but when I look at them I know I mean…

Help—Think about helping my readers everyday (and daily—find a way to help one person, even if it’s just a compliment)

Write—Write daily, whether blog posts or interesting tweets (and email/text my kids good morning and good night every day they’re not with me)

Grow—Visualize my readership growing everyday (and read my daily feeds with the intent of learning one new thing, instead of scanning to make sure I’m not missing anything)

Complete a triathlon.

Earn money when I’m not working.

Hi Peter – your list was interesting. I wish you well with it. It made me realize what a completely different place I am in these days. There was a time my list would have looked a lot like yours. But for now I want three things.

1. To give away as much money and time as possible to others.
2. To spend more time with friends and family
3. To continually simplify my life.

I am excited about my list and know it will continue to be attainable.

You don’t need to spend $45,000 to get kids to watch movies in MRI scanners. You can get the BOLD screen from Cambridge Research Systems (MRI TV Monitor) and the kids love watching it with a mirror which is above their eyes. Total cost is about $5000. Not every kid likes to have claustrophobic cinema goggles on during an MRI because it can make them feel more claustrophobic. You could buy 10 sets on MRI Screens for the price of one Cinema Vision System. There is no installation or training charges.
