Screw the Beach – Use This Summer to BLOW UP YOUR LIFE!

We all know it – It’s summer. July and August, when we’re totally cool with calming down a bit, getting to the office a bit later, leaving a bit earlier, “working from home” a bit more, and in general, putting our chill before our hustle. It’s a tradition of the ages – Perhaps it’s hard-wired into our brains from school – 14 years of “IT’SSUMMERNOMORESCHOOL!!” I get it – Not only was I one of them, but I also was raised by two parents who were teachers – Vacation? That’s what summer is for! Go on a family road trip to Nova Scotia and Bar Harbor, Maine? Sure! It’s summer! We’re trained from early on to equate “summer” with “take it easy.” But that’s a problem.

We’ve become a society that’s become totally cool with weakening our game from Memorial Day to Labor Day, every single year! Why is that OK? How did “let’s stop caring about our professional lives for 60 days” become acceptable? Almost every single one of us does it, like it’s some sort of universal rule. “Calendar says July? Let’s decrease our productivity by forty percent!” Really?! What the hell is that?! You know I preach all the time that doing the same thing as everyone else is nothing more than a one way ticket to the land of mediocrity, right? Well damn it, you’re better than everyone else! So I offer you this: If everyone else is maxing and relaxing, why don’t you use that time to improve your flow? One of my favorite quotes: “Somewhere, right now, someone is training while you are not. When you race him, he will win.” So why not train now, while everyone else is chilling?

Here’s how to do it.

Reach out! If summer means people are chilling, that also means less work for you – But instead of using that as a reason to hit the lake and bust out the wakeboards which, come on, you know you suck at anyway, why not use the extra time you have to reach out to stale contacts, former clients, heck, everyone in your network you haven’t talked to in forever? And don’t just BS it – Start a conversation! Engage them! A quick minute on Google or a quick rundown of their FB or LI profile can tell you what they’ve been up to. Focus on something specific and figure out a way you can help them – then reach out and offer it. That’s how you grow and strengthen your network. They might not need you right now (probably because they’re too busy wakeboarding badly) but they will when they get their sunburned butts back to the office. And that’s when they come to you, and your billings go through the roof.

Don't become this!

Explore! So you’re not needed in the office that much during the summer. That doesn’t mean you should just waste the days sleeping late! Cash in those frequent flier miles you’ve been hoarding for that “perfect trip” (you know you’re probably just going to let those miles expire otherwise,) and head out for a week to work somewhere else. Could be as close as the next state over, or as far as the other side of the world. WiFi is prevalent, electricity is standard on the majority of the livable planet, go out and explore someplace you’ve always wondered about but never had the time to see. You can still work, still check in, and you get to broaden your horizons in the process. At the very least, you can check something off your bucket list. But at the very best, you meet a potential new client or several on the plane or in a tea shop on the other end of the planet. And no matter what else, being in a different environment is guaranteed to implant some new creative cells into your brain, and that’s never a bad thing. I’ve picked up quite a decent amount of business over the years simply by being somewhere that’s not the norm, and not being afraid to talk to the other people who happened to be there with me at the same time.

Earn some extra credit! If you’re anything like me, “extra credit” only reminds you of “Can I do a report on some boring subject to make up for the 68 I got on the Global History midterm?” (For those not blessed with a New York City Public School education, a 68 was equivalent to a “D-.”) But In the real world, extra credit means something entirely different. How long have you had that idea that you believe could save the company tons of money, but have never had the time to research and develop it? Welcome to summer. What about putting together that killer deck and going after that client you’ve always wanted, but never had the time to impress? Hi, season of hot weather! Got a boss who, like clockwork, throws that craptastic, BS, paper-pushing assignment on you on the 30th of each month? Get it done on the 20th, present it to him on the 25th, and get a great suntan from the rays of awesome in which you’re basking.

Let them all come back and meet “The Better” you. You know what summer also assures, apart from fireworks and men who shouldn’t be wearing Speedos? Colleges, Universities, and other schools offer summer courses! At what do you want to get better? How about taking an advanced writing class and learning to write? (I’ve said it a billion times, bad writing will kill you and your company, while knowing how to write will save you and make you rich.) What about an intro to finance class? You won’t get an MBA in one summer, but one class can certainly put you in a better position when the CFO you can’t stand goes off on one of his rants in response to a project you’re suggesting in the fall. There are thousands upon thousands of classes offered in every single city or town, all around the world each summer. It’s not too late to get into one today!

Finally, perhaps it’s as simple as “Eight Weeks to a Kick-Ass Body” summer. Let’s face it: We’ve all done it – January 1, we start some fitness regimen that’s going to make “this coming summer the best summer ever,” complete with a high-five to the new personal trainer you overpaid in advance and won’t see again after January 15th. I’ve done it. You’ve done it. Well, here’s a tip: THERE’S NO FEDERAL LAW THAT SAYS THIS CAN ONLY BEGIN ON JANUARY 1ST! So do it TODAY, for eight weeks, and take a vacation to a warm place in Mid-September, and ROCK YOUR SHIT! Honest to God, the results of eight weeks of solid work starting NOW will BLOW YOUR FREAKING MIND in eight weeks! Check this link out – I did this in a year, but the majority of the work came in the last two months. For real. Your money back if after doing this all summer, that vacation you take in September isn’t the BEST VACATION YOU’VE EVER HAD. I’m so not even joking.

End result: Common belief says “It’s summer. Let’s relax.” But we’re not common. You’re not common. You have eight weeks. It’s up to you.

Hit up the comments below to tell me what else you can do to blow up your life in the next eight weeks. I want to hear it. Hell, I might even try it!

Thanks for reading. Enjoy the summer.

Share the knowledge you already have- volunteer. But not just a little 2 hour gig at the local soup kitchen. Do some research. There are a lot of small, local charities that have great ideas and aspirations, but not enough resources. Are you a financial whiz? Help them get a proper plan together. Do you work in publicity? Help them kick up their outreach campaign. You may be too busy the rest of the year to help out on a big scale like this. Now’s the time.

And yes, volunteering CAN help you blow up your own life. First, you never know who you will meet- they may be potential clients or simply people you can learn from. Second, no matter how seasoned a pro you are, you will definitely take something back with you from the experience. Third, you will grow as a person. Volunteering will change how you look at things, and we all know change is good.

Nobody does summer as ‘badly’ as NYC/Philadelphia area. Honestly, it’s a wonder anything gets done during this one quarter of the year with half-day casual Fridays, weekends at the shore and vacations. It seems some times no one is in the office getting their work done. Seriously – a great opportunity to get ahead of everyone else!

Wow – great post! Very motivating. I am working on the 8 week fitness thing but am also going to start working on business stuff since i have been in “summer” mode too much. (but with 3 kids home from school all summer it is a little harder!)

Write a novel! I spent June “at” Camp NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and finished with 70K words toward my next novel. There’s another summer writing marathon in August for those who want to give it a try.

All great ideas! I might just try a few:)

Great tips Peter! I’m actually going to be taking a Spanish course to brush up on my writing :) 8 week course, once a week, perfect for summer.

I’ve been spending the summer stocking up on crafts for my newly-opened Etsy store, working on improving my artwork and photography, and working on my physical fitness. Summer is when my kids are home driving me nuts, so I look for any way to get out and DO things. Plus…I have a garden that needs constant tending, so if I run out of other productive things to do, there’s always weeding/trimming/etc. No sense wasting the extra sunlight by sleeping/relaxing.

I like Devorah’s idea too…I may have to sign up for the August writing marathon.

Love these tips especially the stuff about Exploring! I live in the Las Vegas area and have been wanting to escape the brutal summer heat for years. I already know where I want to go for 8-10 weeks in the summer — FLAGSTAFF. All the beauty and benefit of desert living that tops out at 90 degrees and gets respectably cool in the evenings. There’s nothing quite like a change of scene and a break in the regular routine to spark creativity.

ROADTRIPS BABY! Summer is perfect for them. Just get in your car and drive. Somewhere you have never been before. Learn about the places you visit, inquire, ask the locals questions about where you are. Its an awesome way to learn about somewhere NEW.

It’s pretty much the opposite in the construction industry. now is the time of year when construction pros are working as many hours as possible to pay off next winter’s bills! So it’s even more important to remember to work on the business as opposed to in the business.

Just got back from a family visit to Japan, so it is time to revamp my website and my whole list-building strategy, rewrite all the copy for my site, pitch high-profile people with samples of my custom design services, and to keep my energy up, train capoeira every day!

This is brilliant! My summer slows down because clients go on vacation or are home with their kids, as am I. I see it as an opportunity to improve my business systems, and connect with my network through email. Plus, I have more time to read so I’m deepening my learning around social media with: “Success Secrets of the Social Media Marketing Superstars” ~Mitch Meyerson. Thanks for such an encouraging and innovative perspective!

Peter, great motivation! Last summer I earned my professional accreditation (Accredited in Public Relations). It was a good and slow-at-work time to study and take the exam. This summer, I’m working on my freelance business. Thanks for the reminder about summer being a good time to reach out to contacts who have more time to respond.

Well, I’m doing what I’ve been doing every summer since I was six years old… at that time it was camping every week-end on the Delaware River…but now I LIVE here… and love it… I’m 83 and I wouldn’t change it at all.. the only thing I’d liketo change is my abilities!!1 I’m 8l3 and getting tired… all the stuff I’ve done other years (outside Spring Cleaning, inside Spring cleaning, raking the lawn, planting grass… all that stuff… is getting harder and I’m frustrated… why can’t we age without getting old??? I’m going to ask that of the “ONE IN CHARGE” when I see him!!! As for volunteering… been there done that… my time now is for me, but it runs out fast… oh,well.. that’s life… So all I can say is Enjoy Every Minute of Your Life… it goes fast!!!

Great article! I travel for a living, and in between trips, I’ve used this summer to learn new software and develop some more training ideas. I do that during December too.

Thanks for a great post, Peter! You are right…summer is a PERFECT time to refocus and regroup…making sure you are on the right track to meet your Jan 1 goals…and changing them if that makes more sense. I joined a picture book writing challenge in January…1 pb draft each month…I’m now ready to submit some stuff and the summer is a great time to polish and move ahead. I’m also planning on a trip (first ever) to Europe sometime in 2013…so an online foreign language class is also on my summer to-do list. In addition, I’m planning a follow-up book giveaway campaign (I donated 2 doxen copies of my book to libraries across the country in May) that will put copies of my book in preschools across the country…for the new school year…great PR for me and great resource for the teachers. And, of course, following up on HARO queries as much as possible…they really do work!

Great post. I thought I was the only one that got frustrated with everyone “off to the Outer Banks” or “the lake” while I’m busting my ass working trying to get ahead. Since few people are around to answer my calls, I use the time to get needed medical appts done and revamp curriculum, one-sheets for speaking, and research work (which by the way I’d love for folks to contribute to: Attitudes towards new workers in the workplace – 2 question survey at: http://totalcareermastery.com/.....ion-survey)

Great tips! I’m starting by checking HARO daily. Next I kick-start my blogs by attending The Mayborn Literary Conference for Non-fiction writers hosted by University of North Texas July 20-22. Two years ago the keynoter was author Bryan Buroughs “Barbarians at the Gate” and “The Big Rich.” What an inspiration!

Not everyone goes on hiatus in the summer. I work for a nonprofit, and our fiscal year ends June 30. That means that everyone uses June to spend the last of their budgets – which always means an overload of work for my department (marketing). Then we use July and August to prepare for our big fundraising season – which runs September through December. My only “down month” comes in November!

Thanks for the kick in the pants. I’m totally following your weekly advice column. I just got 15 mins of shuteye and am now working on my new product for the next 45 minutes. And totally agree with you about writing courses. I’m a professional freelancer and point to my journalism degree every single day for helping me put food on the table.

Just the reminder I needed to hone in on social marketing–to really get a grip on the best and most efficient use of time and venues for my work. Thanks to the extra “push.”

Great thoughts and message Peter! When I sold “air” ie traditional advertising everyone complained about how business stopped in small college towns during the summer and all the reps got lazy. I took a different road and BILLED the heck outta the summers to help businesses STAY busy! it’s all about how you frame and how you work with your circumstances.
    Thanks for sharing!

Many public relations specialists avoid scheduling major efforts in during holiday periods (summer and Christmas/New Year’s). But we see these as presenting opportunity. Let’s take, for example, the summer holiday. In PR and marketing the summer break can be one of the best times to stand out because the landscape is not so crowded. After all, not every friends, clients, media person, etc. is on holiday at the same time. If it’s not the right time to proactively pitch something, use this time to re-connect. You can find out more tips how to maximize you summer and holiday experience in the following articles: http://www.newsmakergroup.com/.....-holidays/ and http://www.newsmakergroup.com/.....fireworks/
