Thoughts on Solo Travel from Barcelona, Spain

Just some ramblings on solo travel – with a surprising revelation if you know anything at all about me. Happy Saturday. (Quote in the video compliments of George Clooney’s character from “Up in the Air.”)

PS: This is NOT a depressing blog post! It’s just me rambling on a Saturday afternoon after too much sun.

Peter I know how you feel. I spent 5 years heavy travel in the US and Canada from Jan 02-Feb 07. I make friends easy. But making friends in a bar is not the same. I experienced so many things by myself that I wish someone was there to share with me. Its not the dinner/lunch/pub company one needs because it’s so easy to find people to hang with. But taking a day off to hike up to the snow pack in Winter Park, Co a day after a meeting with Lockheed Martin (Denver) on two NASA programs, and I am 11,000 feet up, by myself in a place I shouldn’t be by myself (bear country) and standing on the snow pack in June hearing underneath me the melt running down below me unseen creating our river system….so impressed and elated to be there..and I am alone. That kind of sucked.

Nothing beats having a travel companion. But I think that is why its work vs pleasure. Sadly.

And for anyone who has never traveled a lot for business they are going the see this and say ‘But Peter your in Barcelona, I am so jealous you get to travel so many cool places’. They won’t understand.

On the Flipside. Because I was in Industrial Sales for so many years, I knew so many sad people who had spouses and kids and couldn’t wait to travel to be alone (or for the pig males go party and cheat..sad but true). I think sometimes its hard to always be glass is half full.

Peter,
I recently read somewhere that what makes people the most happy is not the cars, houses, clothes, etc… it’s spending time with those we love through travel. We make new memories and form closer bonds that existed before.

You are lucky to travel to so many cool places. Trust your gut. Share your experiences with someone you love.

Boo yah!

Peter, it was great meeting you on Friday night – it was such a hilarious dinner!

I know you have no problems getting a cool travel companion/partner-in-crime/soul mate. Just make sure they get all your references, know trivia about Max Headroom, will call you a “company man” a la GlenGarry, have a love/hate thing about Perez and can parlay on the evolving role of the journalist/media in times of accelerated globalisation. And like cats. Not such a tall order.

Anyway, not sure where you’re off to today but I am jealous anyway. I am back in the hotseat at work at the ad agency in Copenhagen. Anytime you are in the icy tundra of Scandinavia, look us up, fo’ sho’!

So true! I often hike and bike by myself, and I love my alone time, but then I think “well, if I came back here with someone (a boyfriend) we could stay in that little cottage and go to dinner and it would be just that much better.” It’s what made me hold my nose and sign up for eHarmony. Which I’m now ignoring because I’m too busy hiking and biking…

I agree with you… We (our family of 4) are in our 3rd month of traveling in Mexico. I wouldn’t want to do it without them. Even though our girls sometimes like to fight with each other, but hey, they are 6 and 8. We’re building memories that we can share along the path of life.

Peter

We need to go find some girlfriends. I’ll be your wingman. I’m totally serious.

Anyway I know the feeling of traveling alone. I remember running from the bulls in Spain thinking it would have been cool to do that with a couple buddies. There is pro’s and con’s to traveling with or without company. There is absolutely no way anyone can see everything we want to see in the world if we wait for other people but yeah it’s definitely nice to have company as well. Im sure you can find a nice girl to take on a trip and if you ever need your alone time you take a couple hrs to yourself.

See you on the bike path!
